Sandal Guide

"Comfort and freedom of movement for warm days."

Sandals are essential during the summer months, but it can be difficult to find the style that best supports your child’s individual needs.

At bisgaard, you will find a wide selection of open and closed sandals, barefoot sandals, and styles for both younger and older children. That is why we have created this guide to make it easier to find the sandal that best suits your child’s feet, age and needs.

When children play, run and explore the world around them, it is important that their sandals feel comfortable, provide the right support and allow natural freedom of movement. Materials, fit and construction all play an important role in ensuring comfort throughout the summer.

What makes a sandal comfortable and supportive?

At bisgaard, we place great emphasis on soft and breathable materials, helping little feet stay comfortable on warm summer days. At the same time, it is important that the sandal fits correctly and matches your child’s activity level.

Below, you can find the most important things to consider when choosing sandals for children.

  • Size and growing room
The right size is essential for both comfort and freedom of movement. The sandal should fit securely around the foot while still leaving room for natural growth and development. We recommend approximately 1 cm of growing room in sandals for children of all ages.

If the sandal is too large, the foot may not sit securely, which can affect your child’s gait and stability. On all our product pages, you will find a size guide for each individual style, making it easier to choose the right size and recommended growing room. • Fit and support
Children’s feet are constantly developing, which is why fit is one of the most important things to consider when choosing sandals. The sandal should wrap gently and securely around the foot without feeling tight. At bisgaard, we offer both regular and wide fits, as well as barefoot sandals with extra room for the toes.

All our closed sandals are designed with a firm heel counter that helps stabilise the foot. In open sandals, support comes from adjustable straps that keep the foot securely in place around the ankle and instep.

  • Materials and quality
The materials play a big role in how the sandal feels throughout the day — especially on warm summer days. That is why we work with soft, lightweight and breathable materials such as leather and natural textiles that help create a comfortable environment around the feet. This allows your child to move freely and comfortably through all of summer’s little and big adventures.

  • Closure and adjustment
Velcro straps and buckles make it possible to adjust the sandal precisely to your child’s foot. Good adjustment options are important because children’s feet vary in both width and instep height. When the sandal can be adjusted correctly, it feels more stable, supportive and comfortable throughout the day.

  • Safety and stability
Children are constantly on the move, which is why sandals need to keep up with everyday adventures. Our sandals are designed with flexible and non-slip soles that provide good grip on different surfaces.
This helps your child move safely and comfortably — whether at the playground, in the garden or on summer outings.

Open or closed sandals?

One of the questions we are often asked is whether children should wear open or closed sandals.

Many parents associate closed sandals with extra support, especially for younger children. However, the closed front mainly protects the toes, while the support primarily comes from the fit around the heel, ankle and instep.

There is therefore no single right choice. It depends on your child’s age, motor skills, needs and your family’s preferences.

  • Closed sandals
For younger children, it is important that the sandal fits securely around the ankle and instep to help keep the foot stable. This provides comfort and support while balance and motor skills are still developing. Adjustable straps make it easier to adapt the sandal to your child’s foot. When the sandal fits securely around the ankle and instep, both open and closed styles can provide good support. A closed front offers extra protection for the toes and can therefore be a good choice for children who play close to the ground or are not yet fully steady on their feet.

  • Open sandals
Open sandals are often ideal for older children, as they allow more airflow and freedom of movement on warm summer days. Even though the sandal is open, the fit remains important. The foot should fit securely around the heel and instep so it does not slide around during play and movement. When adjusted correctly, open sandals can also provide a comfortable and supportive fit.

Barefoot sandals

At bisgaard, we offer both open and closed barefoot sandals.

Barefoot sandals are designed with a wide toe box that gives the toes extra room to move naturally. At the same time, they feature a flexible sole with no height difference between the heel and forefoot, supporting a more natural foot position and movement.

Many parents choose barefoot sandals because they provide a light and flexible feeling that is closer to walking barefoot. This can help support the foot’s natural movement patterns while allowing plenty of freedom of movement throughout the day.

Both traditional sandals and barefoot sandals can be great choices. The most important thing is finding the sandal that best suits your child’s feet, age, activity level and needs.

How to care for sandals

To help sandals last longer and maintain their appearance, proper care is important.

  • Cleaning
Remove dirt using a damp cloth. Avoid soaking the shoes completely, as this may damage the materials. You can also use our shoe cleaner, which helps remove dirt and stains effectively.

  • Leather care
For leather sandals, using a leather lotion can help maintain the softness and natural appearance of the leather.
