letter from a friend no. 1
In the first release of our series "Letter from a friend," we are proud to present founder and designer Marianne Bisgaard, whose creative mind and attention to detail are the foundation of Bisgaard.
"I am constantly inspired.
Colors and materials inspire me a lot, and how they can be combined in different ways. I love looking at art, architecture, and textiles."
When you step into Bisgaard's headquarters and showroom at the harbor in Aarhus, a calm atmosphere with clean lines and attention to detail unfolds. Each element is carefully selected and arranged, reflecting a place where the passion for shoes and the craftsmanship resonate throughout the space.
We would like to hear about your background - when and how did your passion for children's shoes arise?
My passion for children's shoes has been a part of me since childhood. I vividly remember getting my first pair of Italian sandals at the age of 4 during a family vacation in Italy. My parents always prioritized quality and design, which meant that we always returned home with elegant Italian leather shoes. These early experiences ignited my fascination with the different shapes, colors, and materials used to create children's shoes. This fascination gradually developed into a true passion as I grew up. I love seeing how a pair of shoes can express personality and style, even by the youngest.
Why did you decide to create your own brand?
Starting my own brand was a long and natural process that began with my education at a high school and then continued at a seminar in Copenhagen, where I studied various creative subjects. After a few years, I became independent with my own children's shoe stores, and the experiences from there inspired me to create a brand that reflects my personal values of quality and unique design. I wanted to create children's shoes that were both stylish, functional, and made from the best materials our nature has to offer, and that's how Bisgaard started.
What inspires you?
I find inspiration for my designs everywhere. I am particularly inspired by colors and materials and how they can be combined in different creative ways. Art, architecture, and textiles are great sources of inspiration, and I enjoy observing how different elements together create unique expressions and fits.
What inspired you for the latest SS24 collection?
When I design a collection, I always have several ideas in play, and I often start thinking about the next one while still working on the current one. I see this as a continuous process, building on existing designs and considering what could be improved or added. The collections evolve by overcoming limitations from previous designs and by integrating new elements, such as specific fits or colors I want to highlight. I don't focus on following specific trends; instead, it's a natural progression of our brand. Although I take commercial aspects into account, the most important thing for me is to maintain a consistent line in our collections, ensuring that they always feel cohesive and true to Bisgaard's aesthetics and values.
Which three styles do you want to highlight from the new spring/summer collection?
What is the best lesson you can pass on in terms of being a mother, wife, and businesswoman at the same time?
It is important to try to integrate work and family life rather than separate them. By involving my children in the work process, they feel like a part of my world, which has allowed me to balance my roles as a mother, wife, and businesswoman. Sharing my passion with them means that they understand my dedication and see the value in what I do. Along the way, our children have gathered many memories, and although they have felt our dedication and hard work, they have been a part of the process. They have observed from the sidelines, know our partners, and feel at home in many places.
Your 3 tips for choosing the right children's shoes?
-
Needs Identification:
Start by understanding exactly what your child needs in a shoe - what kind of needs should it be able to solve? This is important because that's what you should be looking for, and not falling for ones that don't meet the need or necessity you're facing, as you'll end up having to buy new shoes shortly after.
-
Aesthetics and Functionality:
Choose shoes that combine practical needs with visual expression.
-
Importance of Fit:
A good fit is crucial for comfort and durability; make sure the shoes fit well and support your child's foot correctly. We work with so many lasts that you can't avoid finding a shoe that fits your child, whether they have wide or narrow feet.
